Android App : PAINTRACK

Je voulais cette fois vous parler d'une application que j'ai découverte sur android. PAINTRACK

Le constat est que j'ai de plus en plus facilement mon téléphone sous la main, plus que mon PC ou même appareil photo, lorsque je peins... et donc je crois en l'avenir d'application pour m'aider dans mes travaux.

I would like to talk about an app found for android : PAINTRACK

What I noticed now is that I got quite often my phone close-by when I paint, more than my computer or even camera. then I really trust in the use of some app to help me in my work.

Cette petite appli (4 euros pour avoir toutes les fonctions) pourrait s'avérer très utile.

en premier lieu elle contient déjà toutes les références citadel, Vallejo, P3, Warpaint, Tamya et Reaper... visualisées par gamme, ou en totalité, classées par nom ou par teinte, par de petit cercles.

chacune peut être ajoutées à votre librairie de peinture que vous avez déjà... construisant ainsi la base de données de votre "banque" de peinture.

This tiny app (4 euros to unlock all the functions) could be very useful. First of all, it includes all the paint reference from citadel, Vallejo, P3, Warpaint, Tamya and Reaper.. shown by brand, or globally, sorted by name or by color, by little round icons.

Each of them can be added to your collection... building then your own bank of paint bottle.

Pour l'import et la reconnaissance des pots, dans votre collection, il y a un outil sympathique : le scan de code barre !! J'étais septique, donc j'ai testé.

To import and recognize the paint bottles, in your collection, there is a useful tool : The barcode scan !! I was skeptical, therefore I tested it.

Donc bien sympa, pour voir les pots que vous avez ou que vous voudriez... y'a même un lien vers amazon (bon ok vers une boutique US... mais le concepteur pense pouvoir customiser ca)

Then pretty cool, to check the paint you already have or would like to have... there is also a direct link to buy on amazon (but ok the amazon shop linked is one from US, but the creator think about customizing this)

Allons voir maintenant la principale fonctionnalité a mon sens... le color tools..

Il s'agit ici de sélectionner une couleur, et le soft vous donne des associations = complémentaire la plus proche, couleurs analogues, triade ou encore la couleur la plus proche... et ce dans toutes les gammes.

Let see now the most exciting feature I guess.... the color tools...

the aim here is to select one color, the soft will then show you some association = complementary colors, analog color, triad or also the closest colors... and this for all the brands.

A chaque fois le soft sélectionne 5 teintes... la teinte centrale doit normalement correspondre le mieux à ce qui est recherché en terme de teinte.

Parfois donc la complémentaire, ou le match le plus proche fonctionne pas mal... ca permet d'avoir par exemple des équivalences... ou un idée des complémentaires dispo dans les différentes gammes.

Each time the soft select 5 colors... the central tone should normally match in term of color to what is requested.

Sometimes the complementary color, or the closest match works well... this allows to find equivalent color, or to have an idea of the complementary colors available.

Prenons l'exemple de ce beau Cyan de chez reaper. Le soft calcule la valeur HSV (Hue, saturation and value/brighness)

Pour ce "cyan" la valeur HSV est = 200,100,82...
Le soft fonctionnant à l'heure actuelle principalement avec la teinte (en gras ici = 200).
Pour trouver la complémentaire par exemple, l'on trouve l'opposé sur la roue donc a -180 degré, soit -180 en valeur Hue (en gras), soit donc 21 (Hue)

Donc le soft renvoi les teintes chez reaper par exemple (mais le même est fait pour tout les autres) qui ont des valeur Hue proche de 21 :

En clair, le soft trouve les teintes qui sont opposées sur le cercle chromatique. Cela dit une teinte peut être bien opposée sur le cercle, et avoir une clarté et saturation totalement différente. cela donnait des résultats variable. (voir ci dessus, avant modification de l'algorithme) En effet un rouge orangé (complémentaire de ce cyan) n'était pas la seule teinte trouvée. Des rose, des marrons etc.. car la valeur et la saturation peuvent considérablement changer la couleur finale... suite à nos discussions, le concepteur a restreint le choix des couleurs trouvées, à une gamme de saturation proche de la teinte initiale.. Soit une complémentaire du cyan ne renverra plus un rose comme ci dessus. (voir ci dessous, après modification de l'algorithme)

Let's take the example of this nice cyan blue. the soft calculates the HSV value (Hue, saturation, value/brightness)
For this "cyan" the HSV = 200,100,82... The soft works mainly with Hue to find for example the complementary color, then it moves to the opposite value on the Hue Wheel, at -180, that is to say closed the Hue value = 21.
The soft gives then the closest color at 21 Hue value from Reaper (but also from the other brand)

In fact the soft finds Hue which are opposite in the chromatic wheel. That being said, Opposite Hues on the wheel could have various saturation and brightness values, and that gave weird results (see screenshot above before algorithm changes). In fact a red/orange (complementary of this cyan) is not the only color found. Pink, also brown .... because saturation and value can change drastically the end color... following our discussion, the creator has limited the choice of colors, to a narrow band of saturation value, closer to the original colors chosen. Therefore, a cyan complementary color cannot be anymore a total pink like previously. (see screenshot below, after algorithm modification)

Conclusion :

Points positifs : aspect et ergonomie, barcode scanner, principe du color tool

Points Négatifs : on devrait pouvoir séparer les métalliques du reste par exemple, le color tool a été bien amélioré suite à mes commentaires, mais reste encore a travailler.

Donc cette app ne remplace pas le fait d'avoir en tête la théorie (enfin pour l'instant), mais elle a le mérite d'essayer. J'espère vraiment que l'algo va être amélioré de plus en plus, car ca peut vraiment devenir un outil indispensable.

Conclusion :

Pros : aspect and ergonomy, barcode scanner, principle of the color tool

Cons : Mettalic paint should be maybe separated, color tools has been improoved following my advice, but could be improoved again more.

finally this app does not replace having in mind color theory (for the moment), but it's a real challenge. I really hope the algo will be improoved, because this can clearly become a must !
