Hi guys,

This is the follow up of the first post I have made about my post apo diorama.
chestnutink.blogspot.fr/2017/04/scenery-wip-post-apo-large-scale.html
I have explained how I built the elements, and now it's time to build the volumes, and the various textures of the terrain.

chestnutink.blogspot.fr/2017/04/scenery-wip-post-apo-large-scale.html

creation of volumes

The basic volume on the left have been created using cork layer + textures paste (this one)
I tried to create few height in the design of the waste land around the road. As I need texture/sand/rocks, the easiest way was to integrate them directly "on wet" before the paste cures totally.. Everything is then fused

mixing medium + rocks, sand

I let a "hole" where I was to create static water.
The road was the major part here, and I want to make it destroyed, dusty etc.. I have decided to use a new texture paste here, Concrete texture from AK (available here)
On the cork layer, where I have cut and glued some little parts to make the road a bit cracked, I lay down a think layer of paste. Very easy !!
Cleaning a bit the mess afterwards but it went really fast.

Concrete texture from AK (available here)

layer of concrete paste
Once the total layer is done, I used spatula, placed on the surface, and removed quickly. The paste is sticking to the tool, and it removes a bit of material creating some holes/debris.
I like the aspect so far, so I clean it carefully after complete cure.

black primer

and white primer over it
Now I see well the volume and cracks.

PAINTING THE BASE : I start the most interresting part, I got some inspirational pictures, and I recommend the artbook Fallout that I discover recently.. very cool !!

I like a lot working on wet blending on my bases, and here, the large surface is really calling this technique.
Thus I took few colors... and apply them directly on the road, and waste lands.. Playing with blending colors on the fly.

after few minutes of wet blending

Bownish/yellowish on the left, and grey/black on the road. Cars driving all the way are supposed to rub the surface that will appear darker in lines.
Brown is also placed on the road holes to create contrast.

after masking for yellow lanes

Continuing with contrast and placing road lines. They are very yellow, but it will be different after all the weathering.

And here we go, now weathering !!
Alors on y va, Weathering !!

Texture with acrylic colors : Texture avec des peintures acrylique
very complex tools !

concrete textures

On concrete base of the tower, I used toothpick and brush with dark paint, to spread some dots, and give a more natural look.

need to sand carefully the wood here.
Water : Eau

On the place where I wanted water, I had to place some vallejo plastic putty (a must for me as there is so many usage of this one !!) and sand it, to give it a more "smooth" surface (the under-wood was way to rough.)

gluing the barel over the colors

I mixed some greeninsh colors, and black, before placing a baril cut in diagonal. I apply some layers of brillant varnish over it to give the wet aspect. Baril was painted by wetblending, with some shades of brown, green etc..

Enamel products for weathering :Weathering à l'énamel

placing the enamel on the base

blending with white spirit

Now I used something very new to me, enamel product from AK (available here). You have to place some rough dots over the surface and blend it using white spirit.
Here I used Sand product and Dust effect. This gives a very cool dusty aspect and adds more color variations.

Oil colors weathering : Weathering à l'huile

adding some oils

after blending with white spirit

I took some oil paints, red/brown dark. Applied them directly on the end of the road, and blend it also with white spirit. This gives more depth on the back of the diorama.

Pigments :

Finally I used various pigments. Dust/sand ones on the clear part of the road, and black/dark pigments on the wheel traces.
Look how the yellow lanes have changed now... I decided also to pour some artificial water around the barrel, as the varnish was not giving enough depth.

almost done

almost.. almost..

close up

Final results so far. The tower receives brown paint, + chipping medium from AK (available here) and light grey paint. With a wet brush or toothpick, paint was removed to create the chipping effect.
The concrete got also some other enamels : green grime, and rust streak to simulate some aging effects.
Final touches using engine oil on some place of the road.
I should admit that I loved doing weathering, as there is so many techniques you can mix. The enamel from AK are very cool, and fun to use. You can find all the products I used in one place : PK PRO shop.
Still a lot to do, but now I need to stop, and go to the rest of the diorama = THE CAR !!! soon a full tutorial on this... and then I may have some correction to do when the miniature + the dog + the car will be on it..

Stay tuned. !

ahah, did you think I will show more now??
